Chapter 14

The optimism of the Mobi Taskforce had grown recently what with privileges recently instated for Recruits to go topside for leisure so it was easy to see why they might all feel the way Berlin did right now. Alya had retained an element of cautiousness about their plight and although she was thinking less about escape, she kept it there on the periphery of her mind should she need it. She had to consider her friends first and foremost but she also had to consider her own future as Mobi’s singular science project. She tried not to think about her modifications too much but it was always there, probing her thoughts so that she had to feed it some attention from time to time.

She had begun to consider her unique position as a prototype and to take Laz’s advice a little more seriously and try to go under the radar.

As it was, she had settled into training well and had spent the last several weeks getting to know Zeph and Eden and some of the other Islanders better. She was still cautious around some of them but she spoke freely with Zeph when they were paired together and out of earshot of the others.

Zeph had been amazing, telling her all about the dynamics of flying out at sea. They’d developed a quick level of trust which Alya thought stemmed from the time they’d had to rely on each other to survive the storm that time in the pod. They seemed to intuitively fly together much like when she and Hanuel were together only it felt like it was on a more even footing than her taking the lead all the time with Han.

As Alya’s trust in Zeph had developed so had his in her. He’d dragged her to the side one afternoon and told her to prepare for a night-time rendezvous. It was his plan to take her to use the radio tower to contact her grandpa on C1, although he hadn’t made that clear immediately he’d told her. Alya remembered that at the time she thought her heart might explode through adrenalin. Eden had kindly provided an alibi pertaining to Alya needing a trip to the ER with a poorly stomach. All lies. She wrote up a sheet and handed Alya a grey pass which she then used to sneak up to the red zone to meet Zeph. He’d organised some cover in the form of a good friend for the evening, rendering the radio tower theirs for twenty minutes between shifts.

Alya was amazed that he’d gone out of his way to help her. She was also a little embarrassed because at first, she’d thought he was organising a date for them.

When he had deliberately held Alya back during a training session and leaned down to whisper to her she had held her breath as she always did when he came too close.

‘Meet me in the red zone at ten p.m., ok?’

Alya had nodded, wide-eyed and mute.

‘Alya?’

‘Yes, yes,’ she replied quickly.
